Welcome to the Dandelion Room, where nature and modern medicine unite!

Herbal medicine is the use of plants to treat disease and has been used for over 4,000 years. It is the foundation of modern medicine and is widely practiced worldwide.

As medical herbalists, we treat not just the symptoms, but the whole person and root causes. Discovering the underlying causes, promoting balance and overall well-being.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is herbal medicine, and how does it work?

Herbal medicine is the use of natural plant remedies to support, treat disease/conditions and improve health. It works by using the active compounds in plants, known as phytochemicals, to promote healing, balance, and overall well-being. Each treatment is tailored to address your specific needs and treat the whole person, underlying causes and not just the symptoms.

Can herbal medicine be used alongside prescription medication?

Yes, herbal medicine can often be used alongside prescription medications, but it’s important to consult with a qualified herbalist. Julia takes a detailed health history to ensure your herbal treatments are safe and complement any existing medications.

What conditions can herbal medicine help with?

Herbal medicine can support a wide range of health concerns, including digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, stress and anxiety, sleep problems, skin conditions, and more. Julia works holistically to address the root cause of your symptoms.

Are there follow up appointments?

Follow up appointments may be in one or two weeks or even after a month depending upon the condition, but you can always call for a discussion if there is anything that concerns you.  These consultations are useful for patient and practitioner and may be for the purpose of checking up how you are doing, adjusting the prescription as things change and ironing out any problems along the way.

What would my treatment plan be like?

The treatment plan is tailored to you and may include advice regarding diet, nutritional supplements, lifestyle and other helpful measures.  The plan may just look at one aspect of your health problems initially with agreement to tackle other issues later.  The herbal prescription can be in the form of a tincture, tea, tablets or cream but in all cases the medicine requires little to no preparation and are easy to take.

Difference between modern drugs and herbs.

Many pharmaceutical drugs, in use, as ‘treatments’ today are based on plant constituents/phytochemicals and the plant world is still a source of new constituents for scientists seeking alternative treatments with new discoveries being made all the time.  Once found the single active plant constituent or phytochemical is extracted and synthesised to be developed and manufactured on a larger scale.  Herbal drugs are extracts from the whole of or part of a plants (i.e. berries leaves, root, seed) and have within them hundreds, if not more, plant constituents.  These active constituents/phytochemicals are balanced within the plant and are made more or less powerful by other constituents/phytochemicals present.  A good example of this, and one that many will be aware of, is asprin.  The daily salicin dose of white willow (salix alba) are insuffient to produce analagisa where as the concentrations in asprin are far higher. However, flavonoids and polyphenols within white willow potentiate its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects providing a broader mechanism of action that asprin with less serious side effects such as, damage to the gastrointestinal mucosa (Vlachojannis, J, Magora, Chrubasik, S (2011). Willow species and aspirin: different mechanisms of action, Pubmed, Phytother Res. 2011 July 25 (7): 1102-4 doi:10.1002/ptr 3386, Shara, Mohd, Stos, Sydney. J, (2015) Efficacy & Safety of White Willow Bark (Salix Alba) Extracts: Pubmed, phytother Res. 2015 August 29 (8):112-6.doi:10.1002/ptr5377ebub 2015, May 22.
