EXUDING PEACE & TRANQUILITY
Welcome to Wern Farm
Wern was purchased in 2021. The farm and house had been neglected for many years, and the last three years have been spent slowly bringing it back. The house is thought to date from 1801, and records have been found in the local library going back to 1831.
WELCOME TO WERN FARM
“Wern is a very special place exuding peace and tranquillity with some amazing spaces and views”
There was possibly a house and farm building on this site prior to the existing house. As the land was owned by the Earl of Cawdor this is very possible with the house at a later date being made “grander” (from) what was seen on renovation) with the enlargement of windows etc possibly for a younger son or relative.
The outbuilding affectionately known as the “Mucky Duck”, next to the house, is thought to have been the dairy and the derelict farm outbuildings may have been here before any house and thirty plus years ago they were part of a dairy farm. The farm comprises of 87 acres incorporating pasture, arable and ancient woodland. As the site had been allowed to go to rack and ruin there was a lot of work to be done on the land as well as the house ranging from renovating hedges to improving pasture regeneratively to completely re fencing the whole site.

Miscanthus
Twenty-eight acres of the land has been put down miscanthus. This crop is not only a biofuel but has a positive effect in restoring soil health, fertility, can reverse and stabilise severe soil degradation (although not required in this case), slow flooding thereby reducing run off and sedimentation into the waterways through its root structure and its ability to increase soil carbon and organic matter restoring soil life, invertebrates, insects and other soil-based organisms and microorganisms. It is net carbon negative capturing and storing carbon and reducing carbon dioxide.
Fleeces
These are available to purchase (the fleece is good for weavers, spinners, peg loom rug making and making wearable clothing) and there is some fleece availability for mulching and hanging basket lining.
Please have a chat with Julia and she can tell you about the staple length, micron range etc. Fleeces can be posted out at cost.
Sheepskin Rugs
We have a limited number of these beautiful thick, soft deep pile rugs from the Trehale Vendéen rare breed flock available per year. They are produced and tanned in the UK and make a lovely present or addition to any home. These can be posted out at cost.
Trehale Vendeen Flock
Vendeens are a rare breed meat sheep originally bred for the French meat market, many years ago. The local Vendee sheep was crossed with a Hampshire Down resulting in a tender meat that has been matured for longer with a deep flavour.
Our oldest sheep is 17 years old and is one of the founder members of the flock – her great great grand daughters are within the flock. All the ewes have names dependant upon the theme that was chosen in the year they were born. We are busy with the sheep all the year round but there are some periods where it is not just busy but manic.
Bird Nesting Packs
Our Bird Nesting Packs are 100% pure natural wool/fleece from the flock. The fibres are short so not to tangle around bird’s legs with birds being able to easily pull out fibres and weave them into their nests where the soft wool keeps chicks warm and comfortable.
Meat boxes
Lamb and Hogget (a sheep that is over a year but under two years i.e. not mutton) boxes are available for purchase at various times of the year. If you would like to purchase one of these please speak to Julia to be added to the list or you maybe lucky to be visiting when these become available.
